Why did the Rangers trade Juan Dominguez again? R.A. Dickey gets hammered by the Detroit Tigers last night -
The Detroit Tigers hit six homers against Dickey, tying the post-1900 major league record in a 10-6 victory Thursday night.
"When you let go of the ball, you're at the mercy of the way the ball is going to move," said Dickey, who only converted to the pitch last season. "It was moving right into their bats."
Five of the homers were solo shots. The only major league pitcher to give up more homers was Charlie Sweeney of the St. Louis Maroons, who allowed seven to the Detroit Wolverines in an American Association game on June 12, 1886.
Just when I was on the verge of saying that the Rangers got the better end of the Phil Nevin / Chan Ho Park trade after Phil Nevin's 5 RBI performance against the Red Sox the other night, a Rangers' pitcher turns in the worst pitching performance in almost 110 years. The reason that a pitcher hasn't given up 6 or more home runs in a game in almost 110 years is that there hasn't been a manager stubborn or incompetent enough to leave a pitcher in the game long enough to get shelled for 6 home runs.
When it comes to Buck's Guys, he just lets 'em roll. Another case in point: Was there any reason to let Phil Nevin and his slow bat take at-bats away from Jason Botts down the stretch last year? Hell no! But Nevin's a Buck Guy whereas Botts is just another whipper snapper.
